Using WinGrid as a Data Navigator

Background

You may want to create an application that uses a "data navigator" interface to present data to the user for display and editing. This type of interface provides a single control as a "navigator" which is used to select records from the data set. It combines this with multiple individual controls to display or edit the data. WinGrid™ is ideal as a Navigator control due to its extensive layout and appearance options.

By using individual controls for editing, you have complete control over the layout of the presented data and the interface the user sees when interacting with that data. A data navigator interface can also be useful when some of the data stored in the data source is in an "exotic" format, such as OLE object data or a data in a custom binary format. You can use a control specific to the data type to display the data, while still taking advantage of the ability of the WinGrid to handle data set navigation easily and robustly.

  • How can I use the WinGrid control as a navigator for selecting which record from a DataTable displays in other controls, such as text boxes?

Solutions

Bind the DataTable to the WinGrid and use the Currency Manager to bind the DataTable to the "Text" property of the other windows controls.

Sample Project

This sample project loads the Northwind Customers Table, displays the CustomerID column in the WinGrid and displays some of the other columns in TextBox controls. The user can select various rows of the grid and observe the row data displays in the text boxes:
